Woonsocket to close some streets in preparation for restaurant reopenings

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – The city of Woonsocket will be closing some streets to let restaurants set up outdoor seating.

As of Monday, May 18, Rhode Island is allowing restaurants to open their outdoor seating areas with restrictions.

Indoor seating remains closed.

To help out restaurants that do not have outdoor space of their, Woonsocket will be closing off parts of Market Square and letting restaurants there put out tables and chairs.

Woonsocket City Mayor, Lisa Baldelli-Hunt said, “They’re very excited. It’s nice to see the excitement. As we all know, they’ve been struggling over the last couple of months. This easing into the dining is a nice way to really test the water and see what kind of reception there is, and potentially this will evolve into something in the future.”

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt says if this works out, they may consider expanding the closures to include more of Main Street for an evening allowing more restaurants to participate.
