World Cup TV Ratings Double in U.S.

We are only seven matches into the 2010 World Cup, but the television ratings suggest a surging interest among the U.S. population compared to the 2006 World Cup.

The U.S. vs England game on ABC drew 13 million viewers, and another 3.8 million watched on Univision.

Overall, through five matches, the ratings have more than doubled compared with 2006.

To put it in perspective, the U.S. vs. England match drew more viewers than game four of the NBA Finals, and more than double the viewers of the deciding game of the NHL Finals.

These numbers are impressive, but probably don't measure the true height of interest in this year's World Cup. Most of the games are viewable online and on some mobile phones. Not to mention, many people watched the games in groups at bars and restaurants.
