PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Earth Month may be ending, but the question of sustainability and environmentalism doesn’t go away.  According to Rhode Island Resource Recovery, the state’s landfill is expected to reach capacity and become unusable by the year 2040, emphasizing the need for reducing, reusing, and recycling as much as possible.

If you’re looking for ways you can continue to shrink your environmental footprint, Yelp has some new features that could come in handy.

Michael Plourde is the Community Director for Yelp in Rhode Island.  Plourde says, “Now more than ever, consumers are really trying to lessen their carbon footprint.  So, we wanted to make it easier for them to find businesses that align with their values.”

Using their newest search options, customers can look for businesses that provide plastic-free packaging, reusable tableware, compostable containers, and even restaurants that will allow you to bring your own containers.  You can even search for vegan options.

Plourde says, “When you remove meat from your diet, you’re helping the environment in so many different ways.  A lot of that is from water usage.  There’s a lot of water usage and waste that goes into producing meat products.”

And it’s not just restaurants.  There are also many other businesses listed on Yelp with eco-friendly options available, like electric vehicle charging stations and bike parking.

Plourde says, “We’re really looking forward to the growth that we see with all of these options.  As consumers check in to local businesses, these will pop up and consumers can provide that feedback.”

The effort is a partnership with the Plastic Pollution Coalition.
