1 of 2 suspects arrested in New Bedford bank robbery

Police have arrested one of the suspects involved in the robbery of the New Bedford Credit Union Tuesday morning.

33-year-old Jesse James Hamel of New Bedford was taken into custody at a home near the intersection of North and Foster Streets.

Hamel entered the New Bedford Credit Union on Purchase Street around 9:30 a.m. demanding money. No weapon was shown.

Police say he then fled and joined a black male in the parking lot. Both ran together on Maxfield Street before splitting up.

Police say Hamel suffered a medical emergency and is currently being treated at St. Luke’s Hospital. He is being charged with a count of Unarmed Robbery.
