WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Warwick police said Friday that a man and woman were hit by a car while sitting at a picnic table outside a clam shack Friday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. at Tommy’s Clam Shack on Warwick Avenue.

When police arrived, they learned that the driver, only identified as a woman, “inadvertently” accelerated while driving through the parking lot.

She then hit the two people sitting at a picnic table, said police.

The woman that was hit was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The man was also taken to the hospital, where he is stable.

The driver, police said, was evaluated on scene and was not taken to the hospital.

No names were immediately released.

Tommy’s Clam Shack released a statement on their Facebook page, saying, “Thomas and his staff offers our deepest sympathies to all impacted by the unfortunate incident Friday afternoon.”

The business said they will reopen Saturday.
