EASTON, Mass. (WLNE) — More than a dozen residents were displaced as a result of a house fire in Easton this morning.

A total of 12 residents were displaced, and a dog and cat died in the fire, according to officials.

Easton Fire Chief Justin Alexander said crews responded around 3:30 a.m. to 13 Columbus Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy fire in a basement apartment that was spreading quickly to the first and second floors of the three-family house, which has three apartment units.

Firefighters rescued a disabled, wheelchair-bound resident who was living on the first floor and could not escape.

All other residents of the house had evacuated before the firefighters’ arrival.

Firefighters said they were able to bring the fire under control within about an hour.

One cat and one dog died as a result of the fire, and another dog is currently being treated at a local animal hospital.

Twelve residents were displaced due to the fire and will stay with family members.

The fire is under investigation, but the chief said it appears to be accidental in nature.
