JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A 12-year-old from East Greenwich secured the title of New England’s youngest Master Scuba Diver.

On Feb. 18, Mia DaPonte earned the title on her birthday, which was the first day of eligibility, after traveling to Cozumel, Mexico due to water temperatures being too cold in Rhode Island.

Mia earned certifications in PADI Open Water Diver, PADI Advanced Open Water, and PADI Rescue Diver, as well as completed a minimum of 50 dives.

According to the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Mia is the first 12-year-old in New England to earn the title, and second in the country.
