BOSTON, Mass. — 30,000 runners from around the world have descended into Boston Monday to take part in the 121st Boston Marathon.
In light of recent terror attacks, added security measures are in place during this year’s race to keep everyone safe.
And for the first time, drones will be flown above the starting line of the 26.2 mile route. They will be supplying live video to two public safety command centers.
Thousands of police officers will be deployed along the route monitoring conditions. Security cameras will also be placed along the route to monitor people coming and going.
Over half a million people are expected to watch this year’s race from the sidelines.
After multiple truck attacks overseas, DPW trucks and barricades will be used to block off the route.
“I don’t want to get people alarmed. There’s no intelligence but we live in a new world where there these are the things that they have to take into consideration,” said marathon survivor, Heather Abbott.
Spectators are reminded that bags will not be permitted. Officials say it is best to any items in a clear plastic bag.
