PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — More than a dozen people are displaced after a fire ripped through a multi-family home in Providence Saturday morning. Everyone made it out safely but the damage is extensive.
Tenants of a Farragut Avenue multi–family home looked on in disbelief as dozens of firefighters got to work.
"I don’t wish this on nobody. This is very, very bad," says Jannette Figueroa, who lives in the house.
She lives on the second floor with 5 of her family members and she was startled by a loud boom just before 10 in the morning.
"When she went to open the door to the bathroom, she couldn’t there was already smoke and there was a lot of popping sounds like something had exploded," says Figueroa.
When firefighters arrived flames were on the second and third floor but all 13 people who live inside made it out on their own.
"Everyone made it out okay there were a couple of pets that also made it out," says Battalion Chief Jeffery Varone with the Providence Fire Department.
Firefighters rotated in and out often, grabbing water bottles on the way out. A second alarm was called because of the heat.
"We have a couple of firefighters who are being seen at the rescue for exhaustion symptoms," says Varone.
Residents won’t be able to live inside but they say it could’ve been much worse.
"They saved our pet bunny over there and sniffles is okay, and we’re okay as a family," says Raymond Perez.
"It’s scary and losing everything to start over but the best thing is we’re alive, breathing so we thank god for that," says Figueroa.
The Red Cross is helping the families and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
