13 named to Rhode Island climate change advisory board

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island officials have appointed 13 people including local government leaders and a research professor as the first-ever members of a new state climate change advisory board.

The appointments to the Rhode Island Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council Advisory Board were announced Friday by Gov. Gina Raimondo, House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed.

The board will be overseeing efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in the state.

The panel is charged with submitting a plan to the governor and legislature by the end of 2016 with proposed strategies, programs and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The board includes Brown University research professor Gregory Wellenius, West Warwick Town Manager Frederick Presley and Sheila Dormody, director of sustainability for the city of Providence.
