18-year-old hospitalized with third-degree burns after TikTok challenge

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — An 18-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with serious burns after he lit himself on fire as part of a TikTok challenge on Sept. 6, according to the North Smithfield Fire and Rescue Service.

According to the department, a 16-year-old boy and 18-year-old boy poured gasoline on themselves, lit themselves on fire, and jumped off a bridge into the water.

Officials said the act was part of a TikTok challenge.

The 18-year-old was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with second and third-degree burns on his back.

16-year-old was not injured.
