2 charged with assaulting officer after traffic stop in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A total of three people were arrested after an alleged assault involving a Providence officer Sunday night.

According to officials, an officer conducted a vehicle stop for traffic motor vehicle violations.

During the stop, the operator, 22-year-old Jesus Lopez fled the scene and entered the back door of a nearby home.

When the officer got to the door, he was confronted by several people who were attempting to obstruct and assault him.

50-year-old Efram Gonzalez is accused of striking the officer in the face which cause a laceration under the officers eyes.

23-year-old Nicholet Whitfield is accused of biting the officer on the right wrist, causing an abrasion on his wrist.

All three were arrested and charged.
