2 dead, 1 in critical condition after Johnston crash

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Two 22-year-old men are dead following an accident this morning in Johnston involving a garbage truck, according to officials.

Officers said they responded to Hartford Avenue around 4:15 a.m., in reference to a motor vehicle accident with serious injuries.

Upon arrival, officers learned a Toyota Corolla with 3 occupants, traveling east on Hartford Avenue, veered into the westbound travel lines and struck a MEGA Disposal garbage truck head on.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rear passenger, another 22-year-old male, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The front seat passenger, a 22-year-old male, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is in critical condition.

The operator of the disposal truck, a 66-year-old male, was not injured.

The Johnston Police Department’s accident reconstruction unit responded to process the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
