BARRINGTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Barrington Police Department said that a man and woman are dead after their car drove into the woods near the Wampanoag Trail.

Chief Michael Correia said that police and fire responded to the area around 8 a.m. for reports of a vehicle in the woods with possible injuries.

When officers arrived they found a vehicle off the roadway that had “sustained heavy damage.”

Correia said that the two occupants of the vehicle, a male and female, were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

He added that the accident is still under investigation, and that both parties were wearing seatbelts but “speed appeared to be a factor.”
