24-year-old hit by car in Cumberland dies from injuries, officials say

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — A 24-year-old man from Cumberland who was hit by a car yesterday while crossing the street on Highland Corporate Drive has died.

According to officials, the crash happened at around 2:45 p.m.

Police said Joseph Arribas was walking in the area of the crosswalk when he was struck by a car travelling through the intersection from Rte. 99 onto Highland Corporate Drive.

The driver in the crash did remain on scene, as did a couple of witnesses to assist.

Arribas was flown to Rhode Island Hospital where he passed away overnight from his injuries, according to police.

At this time, the crash remains under investigation.

“On behalf of the Cumberland Police Department, I offer my deepest condolences to Mr. Arribas’ family, friends, and loved ones. I would also like to acknowledge the Cumberland EMS personnel on scene for their tremendous efforts providing urgent medical care to the victim in this crash,” said Chief Matthew Benson in a statement.
