$500 reward offered for information on abandoned guinea pigs found by hikers

EXETER, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $500 award for information after hikers found dozens of abandoned guinea pigs in the woods of Exeter this week.
The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said two hikers came upon 42 guinea pigs at the Browning Mill Pond Area off of Arcadia Road on Tuesday.
The hikers, Rhode Island Wildlife Clinic volunteers, and a Richmond police officer picked up the guinea pigs and placed them in totes.
They were brought to the Exeter Animal Shelter. Some were staying there and others were brought to the RISPCA in East Providence, the Potter League for Animals in Middletown, and the North Kingstown Animal Control.
Shelter officials said at least one was humanely euthanized for severe wounds and malnourishment.
Anyone with information on who may have left them is asked to call RISPCA law enforcement at 401-383-9081 or send an email to cruelty@rispca.com.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
