6 hospitalized after hazmat situation in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A hazardous materials incident at a 10-story apartment building in New Bedford on Wednesday sent six people to the hospital after chemicals were sent through the building’s ventilation system.
According to the New Bedford Fire Department, crews responded to the Tripp Towers on Ruth Street after a fire alarm was activated. Firefighters began investigating the incident as a light smoke condition but quickly realized a pest control contractor was fumigating the building.
Officials said the lower three floors of the building needed to be evacuated as the fumes were being pulled in by the centralized air system. Residents above the third flood were told to shelter in their apartments.
Six residents were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for noncritical conditions and evaluations.
After the ventilation had been turned off, crews began air monitoring on all floors. Displaced residents were taken to the Fort Taber Community Center.
The Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Team made entry into the basement of the building and began ventilation to ensure the safety of all residents.
Authorities also helped gathering pets and medications of the residents who were displaced. All those displaced have since returned to their homes.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response including the Providence Canteen and New Bedford Emergency Management Agency.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
