PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced Friday that nearly 2,000 fire hydrants and water services across the city will be fixed up.

The $775,000 project will be funded by the Congressionally Directed Spending Program.

The money will be used to remove lead water service lines, repaint 1,952 fire hydrants, and for lead remediation in the city.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt noted that this award would replace the city’s promise to use money from the ARPA fund the project. Therefore, that money will be used to fund other city projects.

“Not only will remediating our fire hydrants from lead and other contaminants contribute to better public health, but because we will also be repainting and reconditioning them, we will enhance public safety and make them more appealing to look at,” said Mayor Baldi-Hunt.

The project is expected to last through the fall.
