93-year-old man visited wife’s grave before fatal Johnston crash
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The family of Angelo Calcagni, 93, remembered the Smithfield man as a hardworking, loving businessman. He died Saturday morning after his car collided with a Johnston home.
“I’m sad he’s gone,” said Laura Calcagni, Angelo’s granddaughter. “We thought we’d have a little more time.”
While driving his truck, Calcagni drove into Stamp Egg Farms in Johnston. Police believe he may have had a medical emergency.
Laura added, “He had been friends with the Stamp family for years. They go way back.”
The 93-year-old was born in Providence and worked in auto repair and construction for decades in Smithfield.
His family said Angelo, who lost his wife in November, was coming from the cemetery Saturday morning.
“He loved his wife,” Laura added. “Just before he died, the last thing he did was visit his wife from the cemetery. That’s where he was coming back from.”
His family hope he is remembered as a proud husband, father, and friend of the community.
No other injuries were reported from Saturday’s crash.
