New Bedford city councilors voted unanimously last night to give the green light to a medical marijuana dispensary in town.

They will send a letter of support to the state who can then approve the dispensary.

Prior to the decision, the Massachusetts Patient Advocacy Alliance held a rally at the city hall in support of the dispensary.

The Beacon Compassion Center’s proposal is to build a dispensary on Mt. Pleasant Street.

They say patients are struggling to get “safe” access to medical marijuana, in the south coast area

"Our true passion was doing it here in this city to bring some kind of economic uprising and it’s an opportunity for that to happen. It’s job creation… It’s tax revenue coming back," said TJ Thomas, a supporter of the marijuana dispensary.

The Massachusetts Patient Advocacy Alliance will wait to hear back from the Department of Health regarding their decision on the letter.
