E-Z pass new charges

Drivers with improperly mounted E-Z passes will soon be charged more to go over the Newport Pell Bridge.

Starting today, the fee for an improperly mounted transponder is two dollars per axle, but repeat offenders may be charged a twenty-five dollar fee plus the toll cost.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge authority says traffic delays and safety concerns are behind the fines.

Officials estimate one-thousand drivers require assistance each month.
