The Riverside man accused in a hit and run that left a couple injured and a dog dead faced a judge today. Daniel James, 33, appeared in Providence District Court on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury.

A husband and wife from East Providence were taking a stroll on Legion Way around 8:30 last night when police say James plowed into them.

“The gentleman was lying in the road. The woman was more over towards the cross walk,” said witness Frankie O’Hara who lives across the street from the scene.

The victims, John and Karen Bell, were rushed to Rhode Island hospital. They suffered bumps and bruises, but no broken bones, according to family. Their four legged friend who was walking along side them sadly died.

Witnesses tell ABC6 that James took off towards the main road after the initial crash. They say he went through the stop sign and hit two cars parked in the next driveway causing extensive damage.

“The lady that saw the whole things was walking across the street when she heard the smash and she turned around and she saw the first car up in the air and smashing off of my car,” said Diana Dauphinee who lives on Legion Way.

Police tracked James down at his home, located just a few miles away from the scene of the accident. He was arraigned and bail was set at $20,000 surety.
