UPDATE:
Police have identified the victim in a hit-and-run accident as 21-year-old Christian Costigan of Exeter.
The driver, 26-year-old Jeremy Flippo of Connecticut, turned himself in to authorities Sunday. He is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident death resulting.
Costigan died after being hit by a car while walking home Friday night. The driver fled the scene.
"I came home last night and parked the car real quick and I went in the house where the windows were open and we heard all the commotion out front,” said Acie Oddo who lives on Ten Rod Road in Exeter.
Oddo jumped back in the car and quickly drove to where he heard people screaming.
"I thought that someone hit a deer and then realized it was a person that got hit,” said Oddo.
Oddo says a group of young men were walking down Ten Rod Road around 9:40 p.m. Friday night after grabbing ice cream. Out of nowhere, a driver hit one of them and kept going.
"They didn’t realize it was their friend that got hit he was just laying there,” said Oddo.
West Greenwich and State Police rushed to the scene and took him to Kent County Hospital where he ultimately died.
"He didn’t look good last night and it was sad,” Oddo said.
"It’s awful dark and to be walking down this road at night is kind of scary there’s not a lot of lights,” said Oddo.
