It took a while, but the City of Woonsocket has a new police chief.

Providence Deputy Chief Thomas Oates will be taking over in Woonsocket after 36 years in Providence.

Oates is replacing Thomas Carey who retired in February.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Woonsocket Police Department,” said Deputy Chief Thomas Oates. “I look forward to establishing positive relationships within the Department and the community over the coming weeks as the new Chief of the Woonsocket Police Department.”

He’s expected to start in a few weeks once he wraps up his responsibilities with the Providence Police Department.
