Safety crews line Mineral Spring Avenue Wednesday morning, knocking down flames inside citizens bank. A call North Providence police say came in as a robbery. When they arrived they found 49-year-old Joseph Lavoie inside.

"We know that the male did light a few objects on fire in the bank and the fire thankfully was quickly extinguished," says Acting Chief Christopher Pelagio.

Witnesses report Lavoie announced a bank robbery, as he began to set fire to items inside. The incident coming as a shock to bank customers.

"Very odd, very odd. Especially at my age, I mean I remember the days when the doors were unlocked and the windows were open but not anymore. Things are different now," one customer tells us.

Police say Lavoie did assault someone inside the bank as well. That is just one of many charges he faces, others include arson, robbery, disorderly conduct, vandalism. He has a long criminal record including assault with a dangerous weapon, and resisting arrest. North Providence police have turned the investigation over to the FBI.
