It was a scary morning for two families in Cranston after a car came crashing into their home. Thankfully, everyone walked away from the accident, but now, those families are left spending their holiday weekend picking up the pieces.
"It’s a lot. It’s a lot to take in,” said Jannine Hansen.
Hansen lives on the third floor. She was coming home late from a birthday party, but when she approached her house, something wasn’t right.
"I thought it was just somebody parked in front of the house. I pull up and it’s somebody parked in my house,” said Hansen.
Hansen arrived just moments after a car crashed into her house. The 19-year-old driver was still inside the car.
"I was just telling her to breathe, trying to get her to relax, telling her I was going to call 911,” Hansen explained.
Police and fire crews safely evacuated the other family who lives in the home, but deemed the house unsafe, forcing the tenants to move out for the holiday weekend. Officials say the impact of the crash was so severe, it shifted the entire home.
"You never think something like this is going to happen to you,” Hansen said.
The driver was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. Hansen says she likely broke her arm. Police haven’t determined what caused the crash, but say alcohol wasn’t a factor.
Hansen says Atwood Avenue is a busy road where cars often speed. After this mornings crash, she’s rethinking staying here.
"It makes you as the person living on the main drag think maybe I should move,” Hansen said.
Later Saturday, crews installed support beams in the cellar and say there is a chance residents can move back in sometime later this weekend. For now, Red Cross is assisting.
