12-year-old boy hit by car in Providence

A 12-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after being hit and pinned by a car outside of his house on Bodell Avenue in Providence.

The boy, Manase Niyonkuru, suffered a broken pelvis, a possible broken arm, neck and back injuries as well as burns and road rash to the back of both legs. He remains hospitalized Friday evening where doctors are checking for internal bleeding.

The driver in the crash has been identified as Josephine Ndimugwanko. Family of Niyonkuru says she is his aunt and had come by the house to say goodbye because she is moving.

Niyonkuru’s mom spoke to ABC 6 News through a translator saying she heard a loud bang when she was cooking inside and ran out to discovered her son had been hit.

"All she knows is that the little boy was screaming mommy help me mommy help me,” said Zawadi Kaburu.

A witness says the 6th grader was just sitting on the stoop when the car came slamming into him.

"All of the sudden a car comes, it was parked and then it jumped onto the sidewalk and pushed him into the house,” said Tiffany Brito.

Police obtained video of the whole incident. They say it shows that the car never stopped when it was pulling into the parking spot.

The police report says that the brakes appear to be working. It does note that the engine of the car was seen running without a key in the ignition.

Ndimugwanko has been cited for the crash.

The home where this happened has been boarded up. It is not safe for the family to stay there as of now.
