An 18-year-old man from Tiverton smashed into a highway warning sign on Route 495 southbound in Wrentham Tuesday at about 7:45 p.m.
Officials say the teenager drove his 2009 Toyota Corolla in the left lane, but when he left the roadway to enter the median, he struck a highway warning sign about the upcoming lane closure.
The force of the collision brought the sign down through the car’s windshield, striking the driver in the head.
Wrentham Fire and EMS transported the teen to Rhode Island Hospital with a head laceration.
Police say the driver was not paying attention to the traffic slowing in front of him because of the construction project.
The Massachusetts State Police remind all motorists that their sole responsibility is to pay attention to operating their vehicle and being aware of traffic around. Always slow down when approaching construction zones.
