Replica of historic yacht America visits New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – A replica of the original yacht that started the America’s Cup tradition in 1851 is in Massachusetts.

The 139-foot yacht America, a replica of the original America, is in New Bedford.

The original America stunned the world by winning the legendary sailing race around the Isle of Wight in England, winning the trophy that to this day bears her name.

The schooner arrived in New Bedford Harbor and is docked at State Pier, where it will be open to the public for free dockside walk-aboard tours. A paid Sunset Sail aboard the yacht is scheduled for the evening.

The visit to the New Bedford is part of a 2016 East Coast tour from the Gulf of Mexico up the Eastern Seaboard into Maine.
