Police in West Greenwich are teaming up with Rhode Island State Police in a joint homicide investigation after a body was found near a wooded neighborhood.
There was a massive police presence on John Potter Road in West Greenwich Saturday night and remnants of the investigation were still there Sunday. Police are still working to put the pieces together in a murder investigation.
"I was pretty surprised. It’s quiet up here usually so I knew something was going on. It’s shocking,” said Victoria Dunford, a neighbor.
Dunford says she and her family have lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and can’t believe that a body was found so close to home.
"We have a couple break-ins every now and then. It’s usually just kids in the woods and things like that but nothing to this extent for sure,” said Dunford.
Saturday night, police searched the woods at the end of John Potter Road right next to a private driveway. According to several signs posted, the woods are a part of URI’s research area.
West Greenwich police have confirmed to ABC6 that they do have a suspect in custody but they have not released any information about who the suspect is or the victim.
Dunford doesn’t believe the victim is someone from her tight-knit neighborhood.
"I would say no probably if anything it’s, I would think it’s more random,” said Dunford.
Police say there is no threat to the general public and community members should feel safe.
