The city of Providence is rolling out sports field improvements in public parks over the coming weeks. Mayor Jorge Elorza announced details of the plan at a press conference on Thursday.
“We are supporting strong, vibrant neighborhoods by investing in open, safe, and beautiful public spaces,” Mayor Elorza said at the time.
According to a statement issued by city Press Secretary Emily Crowell, the softball field at Collyer Park will see the installation of an improved field surface, along with new metal roofs on dugouts. The Bucklin Street Park field, which has already received infield surface improvements, will receive the new dugout roofs as well.
The statement also says Roger Williams Park will see the addition of a new irrigation system by its softball field and the renovation of its outfield grass. At the John Donigian Memorial Park soccer field, the city will be installing a synthetic mini soccer field, gravel bases, fencing, striping, and LED lighting to replace the current solar lighting.
Also included in the improvement program is the installation of new park signs.
“These improvements,” said Elorza, “will make our outdoor sports facilities more inviting and accommodating to the residents that rely on them for exercise and play.”
