Providence has plans to become a more active city

It’s a common sight in providence to see runners or bikers along the street. Mayor Jorge Elorza is making changes, which will allow for more recreation like this throughout the city.

"We want to make sure we are designing our city around people and not cars," says Mayor Elorza.

Mayor Elorza says more public transportation, walking accessibility and bike lanes all fits into his vision for the future of the city. He says right now they are investing in the coming years somewhere between $5-6 million in places like Roger Williams park. Creating a green way with dedicated walking, and bike lanes, as well as fixing infrastructure and creating signage.

"We are going to create a destination like no other park. It really is a jewel we have in the city," adds Elorza.

We spoke with a local running group who says their number of participants has grown significantly over the years, and says Mayor Elorza’s plan is much needed.

"I think the mayors initiatives are going to help the running community in general. Just create a create more of a friendly atmosphere between runners and pedestrians, and getting around the city without your car,"says local runner Eric Lonergan.

Lonergan says he and his wife go for runs at least once a week over at Roger Williams park. He feels if there are more dedicated trails. It could bring more runners to the area.

"I think just making that park a little more friendly for runners and walkers is a fantastic idea,” adds Lonergan.

"We want more people, especially when they come to the zoo to stick around and explore the great park that we have,” says Mayor Elorza.

Mayor Elorza says the money funding this initiative will come from state support, private foundation support like the Rhode Island foundation, and also the city.

And adds by this summer, we will see the whole park transformed.
