State Police are investigating a three-car crash on Route 99 South in Lincoln involving one of their cruisers.

The accident closed Route 99 South at Sayles Hill Road for about 50 minutes as State Police investigated.

Around 9:30, police say a mini van in the left lane slowed down just before the area where a Trooper was parked on the right grassy shoulder, partially in the breakdown lane.

A sedan subsequently tried to pass the first vehicle on the right, but upon seeing the Trooper, hit her brakes and lost control of her vehicle. That car hit the passenger side of mini van, which left the road and struck the back of the parked cruiser.

"Struck out of nowhere, it was an awful crash" explained Capt. Dennis Fleming. "The trooper is very lucky."

State Police say the female Trooper was wearing her seatbelt at the time. She was treated for facial injuries at Rhode Island Hospital and was released, but is expected to be fine.

The other drivers refused treatment at the scene. Police say they may face civil charges as the investigation continues.
