Meetings in Attleboro discuss school budget

Attleboro city hall packed Tuesday night with blue pride. People trying to convince a budget committee to adopt a state law that would allow the council to allocate additional money to the schools from other departments in the city.
"What it would do is, if we see fit, we wouldn’t have to use it. To cut some budgets city side if we see any access and move that over to the school side," Says City Councilor Jeremy Denlea.
Denlea says this is something important for the city council to have during lean years. Attleboro Mayor, Kevin Dumas says over the past weekend the city committed an extra 800 thousand dollars towards the school budget.
"In order to get to the point where we even had this 800,000 dollars to allocate towards this the city already had a 2 million dollar shortfall in all of the other 23 departments city wide,"says Mayor Dumas.
Even with the city adding the money, the schools are still $3 million short. It could still lead to layoffs as well as sports programs adding fees or being cut all together, like the music program.
"You can say our AP classes could be more academically important, but without band, I wouldn’t be able to get through a single AP class," says Attleboro High School band member Kortnie Wheaton.
Tuesday night’s vote did not make it out of committee, it has been tabled to next week.
