WASHINGTON (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is among three Democratic senators meeting with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

Whitehouse is scheduled to meet with Garland at 5 p.m. Wednesday on Capitol Hill.

Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Dianne Feinstein of California are also meeting with Garland. All three lawmakers are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Whitehouse said Wednesday that he’s known Garland, a federal appeals court judge, since the two worked in the Clinton Administration together.

He says he looks forward to the meeting and hopes his Senate colleagues will give Garland fair consideration.

President Barack Obama nominated Garland last month, but most Republican senators have refused to meet with him. They have said the next president should decide on a nominee to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
