WARWICK, R.I. – We are learning more about the double stabbing in
Warwick that killed a teenager and injured his uncle, as his mom speaks
out against this violence.

Police say Jared Rogers, 20, stabbed to death his nephew Michael
Rogers, 19, sometime around 5:30 Saturday morning, then stabbed his
brother, David Rogers, 30. David is recovering. Authorities caught
Jared nearly 10 hours later in North Providence.

Michael’s mother, Andrea, says her son was a good person. "He made
everybody laugh," she said. "All the kids loved him."

Police went to the victims’ Haswill Street house just four hours before
the stabbings, for a domestic disturbance call made by Jared. Police
say the family didn’t want to write up a criminal complaint, and
instead agreed to have Jared sent to the hospital for a detox treatment.

Col. Stephen McCartney, chief of the Warwick Police Department, says
knives were involved in that incident as well, but the family members
didn’t divulge that information. "There were absolutely no signs at
that point that it was anything other than intoxication was the problem
that police had to deal with," he explained.

McCartney calls the situation "unfortunate," saying officers could have
done more to potentially apprehend Jared if they knew weapons were
introduced in the first argument.

Jared has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault charges. He is being
held without bail at the ACI. He is due in court on April 11.
