Arrest made in Taunton homicide

An arrest was made in the murder of a Taunton woman on Monday.

22-year-old James Souza, of Fall River, was taken into custody on Friday, charged with murder and armed robbery.

Souza is accused of murdering 23-year-old Vanessa Courtney, who was found by her girlfriend stabbed to death and slashed in the throat.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office says Souza and Courtney were known to each other, but did not release any other details.

The investigation is ongoing.

Souza will be held in jail during the course of the weekend, and is slated to be arraigned in Taunton District Court Monday morning.
