Pedestrians barely escaped what could have been a tragic situation in Central Falls Monday afternoon as a car went onto the sidewalk and crashed into a building.

The accident happened on Dexter Street just after school let out. According to fire officials, the elderly woman behind the woman behind the wheel cannot remember how her car became wedged between the from of Waldi’s Party Store and a telephone pole.

The driver wasn’t seriously injured, and the kids standing in front of the store managed to get out of the way just in time.

"This could have been really dangerous. We had a lot of children getting out of school, so the sidewalk was pretty occupied with a lot of kids. They were pretty much running when they heard her coming, and thank God there were no injuries and all the kids are safe," said Central Falls Fire Chief Robert Bradley.

The party store was left with a gaping hole and had to be reinforced from the inside after the crash. The business had only been open for about a month.
