Johnson & Wales student struck by vehicle, driver charged with DUI

Police charge a Cranston man with DUI after he struck a pedestrian Saturday morning.

Police say the male victim was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the road near the area of 1025 Narragansett Boulevard, at approximately 1:57 a.m.

When police arrived, the 25-year-old was lying on the road, bleeding and unconscious.

The driver who claims he struck victim, had pulled over and remained at the scene. He was identified as Eric Churchill, 45, of Cranston.

After detecting signs of intoxication, officers did a series of field sobriety tests, which Mr. Churchill failed. He was subsequently placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Mr. Churchill was taken to Cranston Police Headquarters, at which time he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.

Officers obtained a court authorized search warrant to obtain blood from Mr. Churchill. The search warrant was executed and the blood samples will be transported to the Rhode Island Department of Health for alcohol level testing.

The victim is currently in fair condition. He is an international student at Johnson and Wales University.
