Former Providence Mayor and ABC6 News Chief Political Analyst Buddy Cianci’s unexpected death last month was caused by hemorrhagic shock.

Cianci’s nephew, Dr. Brad Turchetta, said Tuesday that Cianci suddenly lost a lot of blood following a bowel obstruction and died hours later.

74-year-old Cianci was taping his weekly show, "On the Record with Buddy Cianci" at ABC6 News Studios on the night of January 27th when he began experiencing sever abdominal pain. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and passed away the next morning.

Cianci was treated for cancer in 2014 and underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

He served two stints as mayor for 21 years, holding that office longer than any other mayor. He ran again in 2014 as an independent but lost to Democrat Jorge Elorza.
