New Bedford police arrest arson suspect

New Bedford Police have arrested a man accused of setting a fire in the basement of a home.
Around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, fire crews were dispatched to a fire at 28 Bentley Street. Officials later determined the suspect, 36-year-old Christopher Viger, had gathered clothing and other items in the basement of that home and then set them on fire.
Upon investigating, officials learned Viger was in the area earlier that day playing street football with youths. After an argument he left the area before returning, asking about the whereabouts of people in the neighborhood.
A witness saw Viger going into the rear of the Bentley Street home and return a short time later before running from the scene with a cigarette lighter.
Viger was taken into custody on Sawyer Street. at about 9:30 p.m.
He was arraigned Monday on charges of breaking and entering, and arson.
