BOSTON (AP) _ Massachusetts State Police say a woman was killed when a manhole cover crashed through her vehicle’s windshield on a major Boston highway during the morning commute.

The victim’s name was not immediately made public pending notification of family.

State police spokesman David Procopio says the manhole cover in the left lane of Interstate 93 south “became dislodged and airborne” at about 7:50 a.m. Friday.

After the manhole cover struck the driver’s windshield, her vehicle continued forward before striking a wall on the left shoulder of the highway, also known as the Southeast Expressway, and coming to a stop.

What caused the manhole cover to become dislodged is part of the ongoing investigation. Two lanes of the highway were shut down during the investigation, backing up traffic.
