PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The Rhode Island Foundation is offering $500,000 in grants for activities and projects that will build a sense of community throughout the state.

The foundation says it wants to celebrate the uniqueness of each municipality.

Nonprofit community groups, municipal governments and public agencies, such as libraries and schools, are eligible to apply.

Applicants could use the grants to improve parks and public spaces, creatively use art in public spaces and stage community programming.

Foundation president Neil Steinberg says community is “at the heart of” what the foundation does.

The deadline for the Centennial Community Gifts program is Friday. Grants of up to $15,000 are available.
