A quiet city hall today as Rhode Islanders learned of the passing of former Providence mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci, Jr.

"Buddy’s a legend. I rank him in the top ten of people who have ever stepped foot in Rhode Island,” said Mark Farnell of Providence.

"He did so much for the city. Gave Providence Place mall and did a lot to help this city. It was just so sad man when I heard the news. Buddy will truly be missed,” said Edward Helb of Providence.

Mayor Jorge Elorza ordered city flags to be flown at half staff in memory of the man he ran against in the last mayoral race.

"Mayor Cianci, he, it’s undeniable how much he loved the city and he definitely left his mark on the city. And we want to make sure his memory is kept very appropriately,” said Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.

Elorza and his team at city hall have been in close communication with the family Buddy leaves behind.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. And we’re working with the family right now to make sure all the proper burial procedures are in place and he gets remembered the way that the family would like it,” Elorza said.

And Rhode Islanders say without a doubt, he will be remembered.

"Buddy Cianci was an extremely good politician. I think he was dedicated to bringing culture and diversity to Providence,” said Tammy Shirley.

"He was always very gracious. One of the smartest guys I’ve ever met in my life. Certainly one of the greatest politicians this place has ever known,” Farnell said.

"Smart man. How he changed his whole life around and really did a lot for Rhode Island and Providence,” said Natalie Tamborella of Fall River.

"He certainly did love this city though. I mean that’s really more than anything that’s what I think he’ll be remembered for,” said Kim Stowell of Providence.

Everyone ABC6 talked to around city hall said the same thing. Whether you loved or hated Buddy, there’s no denying the impact he had on the city.
