PC Basketball Up To #8 In AP/#9 In Coaches Poll, Dunn Named BIG EAST Player Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence College men’s basketball team is ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 9 in the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll. Both polls were released today (Jan. 4). It marks the sixth consecutive week that the Friars have been ranked in the national polls.  Providence moved up four spots in the Associated Press Poll and four spots in the USA Today Coaches Poll. 

Four BIG EAST teams appear in the national polls and the Friars are the highest ranked at No. 8/9 (Xavier – No. 10/12, Villanova – No. 11/13 and Butler – No. 18/19).  It marks the first time in the history of the BIG EAST that the Friars are the highest ranked team in the league during the regular season.  Also, the team’s No. 8 ranking the Associated Press Poll is its highest ranking in the AP Poll since March 1, 1977 when the team was ranked No. 8.

The Friars have posted a 14-1 mark overall. Last week, the team recorded wins at then No. 9/10 Butler (81-73) and versus St. John’s (83-65).

Providence will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5 when it hosts Marquette at 7 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.

In recognition of the team’s ranking at No. 8, the Athletic Department is selling lower end zone seats for Tuesday’s game at $8 each.  Fans should go to Friars.com or call 401-865-GO PC to purchase tickets for Tuesday’s game versus Marquette.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (Jan. 4) that Providence junior guard Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week.  It marks the third time this season and fifth time in his career that he has earned the honor. 

Dunn helped the No. 12/13 Friars post a 2-0 mark last week as he averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals in wins at No. 9/10 Butler and versus St. John’s.  Dunn was 15-29 (.517) from the field, including 6-10 from three point territory.  Dunn scored 20 points, registered nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds in an 81-73 win at Butler on Dec. 31.  On Jan. 2, he scored 26 points, recorded nine rebounds, registered six assists and made three steals in an 83-65 victory over St. John’s.  

Dunn, who was an Associated Press Preseason All-American, leads the BIG EAST in assists (7.3) and steals (3.1).  He also ranks second in the league in scoring (17.5 ppg).  He is the only player in the nation to rank in the top 10 in steals (second) and assists (sixth).

The No. 12/13 Friars will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5 versus Marquette at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center at 7 p.m. on FS1.
