Rhode Island shoppers might be able to take advantage of a sales tax holiday in 2016.

State House Representative Joseph J. Solomon Jr. has announced on Monday that he will pre-file legislation to establish a sales tax holiday for August.

Solomon’s bill would exempt the state’s 7% sales tax on items below $2,500. The tax holiday, is expected to enhance the economy of local businesses.

Solomon plans to introduce this bill on the first day of session January 5th.

The tax exemption would not apply to purchases of tobacco products, gas, steam, oil, electricity, motor vehicles, or motorboats.

“A sales tax holiday can provide a well needed break for people to buy some necessities,” said Representative Solomon. “And it benefits business people by sparking economic activity. We all know that Rhode Island is a difficult place for small business. We’ve committed ourselves to doing what we can for small business owners. The loss of a weekend of tax revenue would be worth it for the small businesses in this state who continue to struggle.”

Several states currently have sales tax holidays.
