Former Dartmouth Police chief dies at 70

Former Dartmouth police Chief Stephen J. Soares dies on Christmas eve after loosing his battle with cancer.
Chief Soars, of Westport, passed away at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
He is survived by his wife, four children, five grandchildren, as well as his mother and brother.
According to officials, Chief Soares spent three decades of his successful career in law enforcement as a police officer for the Dartmouth Police Department. He began in 1967, and later served as Police Chief from 1983 until 2000.
Chief Soares moved to Norwich, Vermont, and served as Police Chief from 2001-2004. He also served as Police Chief for the Town of Windsor, also in Vermont, from 2008 until his retirement in 2014.
His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 10 am in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth; Followed by the burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
Visiting hours are scheduled for Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
It is requested that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in lieu of donations.
