Warwick Police make arrest after a phone scam

WARWICK, R.I (WLNE) – Warwick Police made an arrest on Friday after a package with a large sum of money was going to be delivered, as a result of a phone scam.
On September 13th, Warwick Police received information that a package, containing a total of $85,00 was going to be delivered via UPS to Rhode Island.
According to police, the victim of the phone scam was identified as a 94-year-old California resident, who was told their grandson was arrested in Rhode Island and needed that money for bail.
The victim sent the money as directed.
23-year-old Luis Valdez from Bronx, New York, attempted to claim the package at the Warwick facility.
Police say Valdez attempted to claim the package with a fake New Jersey I.D.
Valdez was charged with Identity Fraud, Conspiracy and Obtaining Money under False Pretenses.
