PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Transportation officials say they’re closing a bridge in Providence as they accelerate the schedule to replace it.

The state Department of Transportation says the Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge will close to traffic after the holidays.

The closure begins late on Sunday, Jan. 3. The bridge is expected to reopen by the end of 2016. The DOT had planned to close the bridge in the spring and reopen it in 2017.

The bridge carries Dean Street over the Woonasquatucket River. The Cardi Corporation received a $5.6 million contract for the work. The bridge is classified as structurally deficient.

The DOT is also repairing the Hamlet Avenue Bridge in Woonsocket, another structurally-deficient bridge.

One lane will be open in each direction.

The $2.8 million project is expected to be complete in 2017.
