Some Rhode Islanders turn to Gettr over Twitter policy concerns
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Some conservatives in Rhode Island are now turning to a Twitter alternative called Gettr.
They tell ABC6 News they have concerns about Twitter suppressing their freedom of speech.
Unlike Twitter, comments or replies are never hidden on Gettr.
ABC6 News spoke with Nicole Solas, one of the most popular conservative voices on Twitter in Rhode Island, with nearly 23,000 followers.
“Mao’s China, the USSR, had very strong restrictions on speech,” Solas said. “There’s no evidence that unfettered, unrestrained free speech leads to tyranny. In fact, the opposite is true. If we want to live in a society that values diversity, pluralism, law and order, respect; then we need more free speech, not censorship.”
According to Solas, she created a Gettr account after Twitter suppressed her tweets; hiding replies to her posts with conservative content.
For example, one comment censored on Solas’ account was a Twitter user replying “unacceptable” to one of her posts.
ABC6 News reached out to Twitter, and received a reply, but there was no response to concerns about hidden comments for this article.
